Since 1907 Barnes has been considered a world leader in developing innovative honing and bore finishing technology and processes.
The earliest Barnes honing machines were the first to make honing a practical and efficient means of finishing automotive cylinder bores in a production environment. As honing and bore finishing requirements evolved, Barnes introduced a multitude of new products and innovations including multiple spindle machines, automatic part load/unload and transfer, automatic tool changing devices, in process part gauging, servomotor controlled honing stone expansion systems and single pass bore finishing. This long history of innovation has culminated in a new generation of machines, tools, fixtures and abrasives that deliver improvements in honing and bore finishing accuracy, surface finish, productivity and efficiency that were unimaginable just a decade ago.
Barnes Bore Honing and Finishing Systems was founded in 1907 as Barnes Drill Co. during which time they began to manufacture the first all-geared drilling machines. Since its inception, Barnes has been considered a world leader in developing innovative new technology and processes to help manufacturers improve product performance, quality and cost. The earliest Barnes honing machines were the first-ever to make honing a practical and efficient means of finishing automotive cylinder bores in a production environment.
As Barnes Drill Co. became an established presence in the world of manufacturing and their share of the market grew, they eventually became known as Barnes International. The company continued to grow, adding various products lines such as coolant filtration systems in order to provide their customers with a complete or single source solution for their surface finishing needs. As production requirements increased, so too did Barnes' ability to meet the need for greater speed, accuracy and efficiency. The long history of innovation has today culminated in a new generation of stand-alone machines and complete turnkey systems that deliver improvements in bore accuracy, surface finish, productivity and efficiency that were unimaginable just a decade ago.
Taking note of Barnes long history of continually evolving technology and customer service, Lapmaster International decided to make the Honing Systems Division of Barnes International a division of their company. The Honing Systems Division of Barnes International became known as Barnes Bore Honing & Finishing Systems as of February 6th 2006 when they officially were acquired by Lapmaster. Lapmaster International, LLC, a manufacturer of high precision machine tools headquartered in Mount Prospect, IL, also has a long history in the field of precision surfacing. They are a recognized world leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of precision grinding, lapping, and polishing products for the precision surfacing of virtually any material including metals, plastics, optics, and advanced materials. The addition of the newly acquired Barnes Bore Honing and Finishing Systems Division has added a series of industry leading bore honing and finishing machine tools to Lapmaster’s existing product range of high quality precision surfacing equipment.
